How do PDF/ digital patterns work? Simply download, print, and sew. You’ll need a free Adobe Acrobat reader program and any home printer (or a nearby copy shop for A0 printing). Once you’ve printed the pieces, tape or glue them together. You’ll find an easy-to-follow how-to guide inside the pattern instructions, plus support in our Facebook group.
The trim-free pattern comes in A4 or US letter printable sizes and includes full pattern pieces and a detailed tutorial to guide you every step of the way. An A0 format (pattern pieces only) is also included should you wish to have your pattern printed professionally. PDF Layers allow you to select and print only the size/s you want/ need.

This was pretty easy to make. I am not a quilter, so I struggled some with that part. I decided to just make a big X on each square for the quilting.

This blanket is so quick to whip up and I love the carrying handles when you take it to the beach. As it uses a polyester fill instead of wool or cotton, if it gets wet it dries so easily. Plus there is an option to make the bottom waterproof!

It turned out gorgeous! The strap placement was hard to understand in the tutorial. Not being to scale confused me. Maybe a note about that would help. The sandwiching instructions are a lot like making a quilt, however, with the back being cut the same size as the front and with thick batting, even with basting spray and pins, there is no way to keep everything lined up perfectly. I lost some inches or parts of them, when I had to square up the edges after quilting the layers. I would suggest to cut the back larger than the front and trim off any excess after quilting.

I enjoyed making the picnic blanket as a challenge to myself (a garment sewist usually). I know I will use it regularly as well! I found it difficult to use a 3/8″ binding and feel like it would be beneficial to increase to 1/2″ binding for a few reasons. The first being a slightly larger margin I feel would be more manageable for a beginner sewist. The second being when I started carrying around the rolled up blanket with the handle, it came apart at one of the seam. I think a larger seam may have anchored the strap better.

This is a versatile beginner-friendly pattern. It’s easy to roll up and store, and can be used on the ground or on a picnic table for a festive, fun outdoor meal. I used quilting cotton and the very thinnest available quilt batting. Tips: (1) If you have any extra fabric, use it to make matching picnic napkins! and (2) The corners are easier to get the bias around if you pre-press the curved bias tape, and perhaps use a glass, saucer, or jar to make a slightly shallower curve for easier sewing.

Ok, so I’ve literally NEVER quilted a single thing in my entire life before this. Despite that, this came together super quickly, mostly because each individual block is nice and big! The smallest size was still plenty large enough to fit our family picnic including my husband, son, and myself, and you can’t beat the way it rolls up and buckles together!
