Fabric - Suitable fabrics are light to medium-weight woven fabrics (e.g. 100% cotton, cotton blend, linen, taffeta, chiffon, georgette, or rayon) or knit/stretch fabrics (e.g. jersey). Make sure when you are picking your fabric to consider the type of look you'd like and how much drape your fabric has. If the fabric is stiffer (e.g. cotton or linen), the finished look of the garment will be boxier, oversized, and more structured. A fabric that has drape will hang in folds and swing when you move, limiting the oversized appearance. Olivia doesn't sit off the shoulders, but also not quite on. This allows the armhole to be comfortably fitted without being loose, as you might expect from an oversized top. So, try different fabrics and enjoy a closet full of comfortable, beautiful tops with lots of different looks.
You will also need:
  • Elastic - use 1/2 inch wide elastic for the neckline and optional 1/4 inch elastic for the sleeves. You will need approximately 1-4 yards for all sizes depending on sleeve option and size.
  • OPTIONAL - Any trim or ribbon you would like to use. You can use any width and type of ribbon you like but for the exact look in the photos we used 1 inch wide satin ribbon, and some ric rac. You will need 2-3 yards of ribbon for all sizes.
  • Thread to match fabric and any trim.

How do PDF/ digital patterns work? Simply download, print, and sew. You’ll need a free Adobe Acrobat reader program and any home printer (or a nearby copy shop for A0 printing). Once you’ve printed the pieces, tape or glue them together. You’ll find an easy-to-follow how-to guide inside the pattern instructions, plus support in our Facebook group.

The trim-free pattern comes in A4 or US letter printable sizes and includes full pattern pieces and a detailed tutorial to guide you every step of the way. An A0 format (pattern pieces only) is also included should you wish to have your pattern printed professionally. PDF Layers allow you to select and print only the size/s you want/ need.

    I am a moderate beginner – have sewn a few things for my kids and several pillowcases. This came together really easily. I did take about 10.5″ off the elastic at the neck, because I wanted to close the neckline in a little more. This caused the shirt to cinch up a little – so it was a little shorter than I would have originally liked. But this was a great learning experience and with a few tweaks I can get this pattern to be perfect.

I am on the edge of 2 different sizes so I went with the smaller one for this. This gave it the perfect amount of flow for my frame.     The Olivia top is pretty loose and easy in the fitting department. Nothing too complicated, the most “”difficult”” part is adjusting the elastic for your specific shoulder needs, and that’s really easy.

    So options- this has a couple sleeve lengths, the option to do elastic at the bottom of the sleeve, and you can do this with woven OR knit. Pretty nifty if I do say so. I chose to do loosey goosey short sleeves- not that it’s called that ;). I’ll probably extend the short sleeve a bit next time, this length is fine, but my upper arms get cold easily.

    Sewing the Olivia is super easy and simple. Great for trying out wovens for the first time!

    Overall I enjoyed this pattern. I wish I’d had more fabric to make longer sleeves. I do find the short sleeves are too open for seeing my undergarments. I also found I had to take in the elastic on the neck about eight inches. However, that may be due to my knit fabric being a bit heavy and weighing down the elastic. Like I said – overall this was a really fun pattern to make, and I look forward to making one with long sleeves.
