This is quick and easy to sew gorgeous women’s maxi skirt pattern that can be customized to suit your style. With lots of variations including four lengths, two waistband options and optional pockets, there are dozens of different looks to create.

Fabric - You will need light to medium weight woven fabric for the skirt (e.g. cotton, linen, taffeta, crepe de chine, rayon). The skirt is very full so heavier fabrics will not work as they will pull, and the waistband will not sit correctly. You can use a knit/stretch fabric for the skirt if you wish, however you will need to either use a contrasting woven fabric for the front waistband, or if you wish to use the same stretch fabric, use a medium/heavy weight interfacing on the front waistband to stop it from stretching. It is also a good idea with knit/stretch fabrics to hang your nearly completed skirt for a few days after Step 6, before hemming. That way the fabric can rest, and you can adjust your hem length to ensure the skirt is the length you wish. The skirt pieces for women's sizes 6 to 15C are too wide to fit across 115cm/45 inch wide fabric. They require 150cm/60 inch wide fabric. If you wish to use 45 inch wide fabric, and it is a woven fabric, there are a few other options you can follow. See the Cutting Instructions for how to deal with these.

  • 1-inch wide elastic:
    • regular waistband - approximately 1 yard will be sufficient for all sizes.
    • tall waistband - approximately 2 yards will be sufficient for all sizes.
  • Thread to match.

How do PDF/ digital patterns work? Simply download, print, and sew. You’ll need a free Adobe Acrobat reader program and any home printer (or a nearby copy shop for A0 printing). Once you’ve printed the pieces, tape or glue them together. You’ll find an easy-to-follow how-to guide inside the pattern instructions, plus support in our Facebook group.

The trim-free pattern comes in A4 or US letter printable sizes and includes full pattern pieces and a detailed tutorial to guide you every step of the way. An A0 format (pattern pieces only) is also included should you wish to have your pattern printed professionally. PDF Layers allow you to select and print only the size/s you want/ need.

I would recommend this pattern, and if you are dithering about purchasing it, I would go for it, you will not regret it!!

    I have had my heart set on a floor length seersucker maxi skirt for ages (since before I could sew) and the Arabella was the perfect fabric for this! The elastic waist makes this easy to fit, even for beginners. It does take a lot of fabric, but that’s to be expected for a full maxi skirt. The gathering might be the hardest part of this skirt, but the instructions were very clear, as were the illustrations. There will be many more of these skirts in my future!

I used bubble crepe fabric for the first time, which was a little fussy to work with, but made a very lovely, flowy, skirt. It’s 45 inch fabric so I actually had to use it against the grainline in order for my pattern pieces to fit on the fabric. The skirt is full and not fitted at all so this did not impact the fit.

    This is a beautiful, simple sew for even a beginner. We tried out the ladies’ XXS small for my tween and it worked great once we made some adjustments for height (which was simple with finished measurements and cut lines marked right on the pattern pieces). We love the pockets for practicality. We used a lightweight gauze for a comfy summer skirt, but can see this being made in a variety of materials for every season.     I enjoyed making this skirt. I did have a few confused moments due to directional fabric, but that’s not a new thing for me! I did this in a woven as well as a light-weight knit and both turned out great. The woven has more of a dressy factor to it, but my daughter was insistent that she needed a purple skirt.

    In hindsight, I don’t think I’d bother with the pockets again for her even though they are relatively simple. I did french seams the first time, but went with using the overlocking foot for my regular sewing machine the second time. I think for a special fabric I’d likely stick with french seams because I prefer that look.

    I will definitely be using this as my go-to pattern for quite a while for her skirts. I like the mix of an elastic back waist and a set front one. Oh.. if your kiddo is a bow person, do the wider sash. I know mine will prefer that in the future. The regular waistband looks nice, but it doesn’t have the “”wow”” of the bigger bow.

I think the only quirk a beginner may have is with the gathering, but if you follow what the pattern says and do it in the 4 sections it is very doable!
