Make a Christmas decoration that will last for years with this free advent calendar sewing pattern. This sweet advent calendar makes a tree on a fabric backing with little pockets for the days and adorable ornaments to go in the pockets! As you countdown to Christmas, you pull out an ornament and decorate the tree! You can either sew or glue every step so this is a really great craft project to do with the kidlets. Make the full calendar for a lovely heirloom Christmas decoration. Or make up the ornaments for beautiful tree decorations!
Skill Level – Beginner
Sizes – Each ornament is approximately 2-3 inches tall. The finished calendar is 20 x 35 inches.
Options – There are three options for how to assemble the tree (a solid tree, layers or individual branches), and two options for the pockets (either 4 strips of 6 pockets, or 24 individual pockets).
Fabrics – You’ll need various scraps of a non-fraying fabric such as felt for the ornaments, plus 24 short strips of ribbon and 24 buttons. For the calendar, you’ll need one larger piece of non-fraying fabric 20 x 35 inches for the backing and approximately 15 x 20 inches for the tree. For hanging you will also need a 30 inch strip of ribbon or twine and a 24 inch long piece of dowel. Plus any trim or extra decoration you want to add!
If you use a fabric with a print or nap such as velvet, remember to cut all pieces in the same direction and to allow extra fabric for this.
See the fabric requirements in the gallery above for yardage. A serger/ overlocker is optional but NOT required.
Format – This trim-free pattern is a downloadable PDF and comes in A4 or US letter printable sizes. An A0 format (pattern pieces only) is also included should you wish to have your pattern printed professionally. PDF Layers allow you to select and print only the size/s you want.
