Great options are stretch denim, ponte scuba, bengaline or even an old pair of stretch jeans upcycled.
-
Stretch direction - For some stretch woven fabrics, the stretch runs down the selvedge, rather than across. If you find your stretch is running down the selvedge, you will need to turn your pattern to accommodate for this change. Check you are cutting your pattern pieces with the stretch going from hip to hip, and not waist to ankle.
-
Stretch denim fabric is notorious for shrinking. Darker colors will also stain your fingers and sewing machines as the dye warms up while being handled. Please pre-wash your fabric first (on its own) and dry before using. It can also mark easily in the wash so do not leave it sitting in your washing machine or dryer after washing, hang or fold as soon as you are able.

* If you are using a narrower fabric, a directional print, or a fabric with nap you may need more.
** Make sure to wash, dry, and press all fabrics before cutting out in case they shrink.
You will also need:
Jeans OPTION:
• 1x Fastening - approximately ⅝ - 1 inch wide. You could use a traditional jeans style button, a regular button, or a snap. If using snaps, go for metal or heavy-duty snaps.
• OPTIONAL ⅜ inch wide Jeans rivets – 8x for the corners of each of the front and back pockets. Maximum size of ½ inch.
• OPTIONAL ½ inch wide Single fold bias tape – This can optionally be used to finish the fly area (half a yard will be sufficient for all sizes).
• 1x Zipper – you can use any 8-inch zipper, but a ‘chunky’ or ‘jeans’ zipper will be more authentically jeans-like for sizes XXS to 5XL. We recommend the faux fly for sizes 12 – 24 mos, or alternatively you can use a 3 inch zipper. Use a 3 inch zipper for sizes 2-4 yrs and a 4 inch zipper for sizes 5-12 yrs.
• OPTIONAL 1 inch wide plain/buttonhole elastic – Approximately ½ yard will be sufficient for all sizes..
• Thread to match. You may want to also use specialty top stitching thread. This is usually a heavier weight and you may need more than you are used to as there is generally less on a spool. You will need 2-3 spools.
Jeggings OPTION:
• 1 inch wide elastic – 1 ½ yards will be sufficient for sizes XXS to 5XL.
• ¾ inch wide elastic – 0.75 yards will be sufficient for sizes 12 mos to 12 yrs.
Tools- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Buttonhole presser foot
- Pins or clips
- OPTIONAL Zipper foot for the zipper fly option.
- OPTIONAL hammer or mallet for attaching buttons.

Seriously these are so comfortable! After having sewn many pairs of jeans over the years, I have to say that this was by far the easiest pattern to follow. Instructions are clear, illustrations show each step so you are not constantly guessing what the directions actually mean.

These jeggings were surprisingly easy to sew! I was expecting them to be a lot more complicated, especially the flat felling, but they came together more quickly than I thought. The fit was a little odd. The jeggings were very slim fitting in the calf and the rise in the waist was almost awkwardly high. My daughter didn’t seem to mind though and she was very excited about her new pants.
Margaret Smith –
Great pattern! The little girl that received these was so excited to wear them. The fit was perfect and the instructions were easy to follow.
Patti Booth –
I love this pattern. It adds a custom touch and allows for adjustments to make a great fit!
Michele Axmaker Chapman –
Such a fun pattern! Create pants or pant like skinny jeans for kids.
Jenni Elizabeth Early –
If you want to perfect your pants fitting, this is the pattern for you! With finished measurements for all the parts of your legs and instructions for grading, lengthening, and shortening, you can get your muslin really close to fitting perfectly. Plus RP has a free pants fitting tutorial that tells you how to fine-tune your fit by reading the wrinkles to see what additional adjustments you might need. Fitting your personal body shape is such a fun puzzle, and this pattern will be awesome to make again and again once you get it dialed in 🙂 So much fun!
Charlene Lee –
These are nice looking pants . They sew up pretty quick and look like store bought skinny jeans! These should be a hot seller because they look so good! great pattern !
Deb Sendelbach –
The best pair of skinny jeans ever! I used jeggings fabric and absolutely love my new skinny jeans. As always, great instructions!
Sarah Hopkins –
I’ve been looking for a super skinny jeans pattern for ages so I was so happy when this pattern was released. The instructions were really clear for the fly zip and the flat fell seams, lots of options. This won’t be my last pair.
Charlene Lee –
these Skinny Jeans are a quick sew and look like they came from the store! It is so fun to sew using different types of seams! This will be a hot seller because you don’t have to buy readymade ..you can make them to fit you!
Bernadette Aitken –
This is a pattern that benefits from you taking your time and working through each step slowly. I unpicked a few times, but the result was very satisfying.
Jori Cornand –
I sometimes struggled but absolutely love the end result. Good explanation with many pictures!
June Butchee –
Jeans have never fit me, so I wasn’t looking to make jeans. I wanted some comfy Jeggings and this pattern delivered. I made mine totally with the serger, except for hemming and it was a fast sew. You can take your time and do all the extra top stitching if you like. The fit is perfect for me. I usually have to increase the rise on front and back and give myself some extra room in the seat area, but I did not have to do any of that with this pattern. This is an excellent pattern! Great drafting and great instructions.
Nali –
The Ladies Skinny Jeans pattern is simply fabulous. Depending on the stretch of the fabric, it can be super hugging tight or just comfortably tight. Whichever the style, it wears beautifully! Thank you for the great sewing instructions.
Adelle Pears –
This is such a useful wardrobe staple and a quick and easy sew, the fly or faux fly is the trickiest bit but as usual the instructions are amazing! For me the biggest query is what to embroider on the pockets, the options are unlimited!!!
Debra Eichenberger –
Such an exciting sew! The pattern has some complex stitches, but it is so easy to follow that you’ll feel like you can sew anything! Can’t wait to make more of these for my fall wardrobe!
Jamie Adler –
Wait and see what you can sew! After lengthening both front and back rise and reducing the high thigh, with help from Rebecca Page’s excellent pants fitting guide, I have a great pattern for skinny jeans AND jeggings! Can’t wait to make more!
Daisy –
I think the pattern itself is constructed very well. I was able to craft a really cool 1st pair of jeggings, so the pattern itself is pretty amazing and Im proud of my 1st flatfelled seams!
Michelle Hall –
I made the jeggings version of this pattern and the only trouble that I had was with the fabric that I chose (faux suede)! I love the fact that there is an “at a glance” one-pager for instructions for more advanced sewists but MUCH more in depth instructions for those that need a little more help. I flipped between the two. The photo images for each step were extremely helpful – especially when it came to the front pockets. Those were a little confusing at first but after reading through and really looking at the photos, I figured it out. I learned a new technique that I had not tried before, flat felled seams. The instructions walk you through step-by-step so it wasn’t intimidating at all. I love my new jeggings and think I’m going to make a second pair in stretch denim (hopefully that fabric will be easier to work with than the faux suede!). I consider myself a confident beginner and I didn’t have any trouble, aside from a few minutes of intense reading for the front pockets.
Carol Remington –
Great looking jeans and I can’t believe I actually sewed these! I will shorten the rise and the waist in the next pair. The rise was too high and the waistband was too big. My choice to size up to XL but it was too much. Since I have a button, I can move the button over which will make the waist fit better.
Liz Faber –
“I’m so happy to have a pattern which I can use to make jeggings so I look good while being super comfortable while in lockdown (again!).
This pattern was quick and easy to sew and the results are perfect.”
Irina Akkaya –
Great Pattern. I have a question about the sizes because I took my measurements, I graded the pattern and the jeans didn’t fit. What or where should I pay attention?
Deb Carpenter –
This is the first time I’ve ever made jeans and I have to admit I was quite worried about the fly zip insertion. I needn’t have been worried – the instructions were clear with photographs and the jeans fitted me perfectly!
Torgunn Myklebust –
She loved the fit of this jeans.
Lim Hwee Ke –
Cute pattern! I love that i can make a great pair of jeggings with this!
Vera Bering –
I love the fit of the skinny jeans and would make them again.
Nadine Simard –
Skinny jeans are now part of my work wardrobe, home work office! This is a great pattern to learn how to sew a zipper fly and use a flat fell seam. If this sounds too difficult the pattern includes a jeggings elastic waistband and faux fly options to get you started towards the perfect fitting skinny jeans. This pattern has a high waist, if you have short torso you will need to make some adjustments to the raise.
Abby Batkin –
FANTASTIC! I love having a pair of jeans that actually FIT. sizing and cut are amazing, instructions easy to follow too.
Jane Whicheloe –
This pattern gave me confidence in making my first pair of jeans. Clear photos with easy to follow instructions
Jessica Kaiser –
I’ve never sewn pants before never mind JEANS and these came out almost perfect! Simple laid out instructions that take you through each step! I love how easy it made it – and my teenage daughter will ACTUALLY wear them! Win win!! Will definitely be making more of them!
Luana Furlanetto –
I did the jeggings version of this pattern with faux fly, and the fitting is just great! I can’t wait to wear them when it gets a little colder
Kelly Tuttle –
Seriously these are so comfortable! After having sewn many pairs of jeans over the years, I have to say that this was by far the easiest pattern to follow. Instructions are clear, illustrations show each step so you are not constantly guessing what the directions actually mean.
Sally Partridge –
I made the jeggings with no back pockets or belt loops, as I was hindered by lockdowns and the availability of fabric, and found them an easy sew. I would like to try some more with the full pattern when I can get to a fabric shop to select material.
Yolanda Mardest –
I like this pattern, instructions were pretty easy to follow, and I love the fit. I will definitely be making this pattern again
Heather Morrow –
I could never figure out how Jeans are made, it just didn’t make sense to me untill I made this pattern! The step by steps are so easy to follow and I’m super happy with the finished product!
Frieda Flavianu –
