Alright we are in the final stretch of the Berry Bubble Shorts Sew Along! For day four we are going to put all of our pieces together.
First we are going to layer our pieces in the following order. Place your back lining right side up, followed by your shorts front, also right side up. Last, place your shorts back face down on top of your shorts fronts, so right sides are together.
Line up the side seams of all layers and sew together with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Make sure that your topstitching lines match up along the front and back before pinning. Press your seams toward the back.
Baste your back lining to your back shorts along the top with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Pull your main fabric up and your lining down and sew both inner leg seams together with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Press both seams open.
We are now going to work on the regular elastic waistband. If you are using button hole elastic, follow the instructions in your PDF. Fold your waistband lining up toward the wrong side of the fabric by 1/2″ and press. With right sides together, place the lining and main waistband pieces together. Pin and then sew up one short side, leave your needle in, lift your presser foot and pivot along the corner, drop your presser foot and continue sewing along the top, pivot and then sew down the other short side. Do not sew along the bottom.
Clip both top corners of the waistband being careful not to cut too close to the seam.
Turn right side out, poke out corners, and press.
Line up the edges of your waistband with the edges of the side yolk with right sides together. Place your pin horizontally along the seam allowance so we can check that it matches up with the front yoke along the top.
Flip your front and side yoke up and make sure they are even with the waistband. Adjust as necessary and repeat for the other side. Flip back down and continue pinning your waistband to your shorts. You will have to stretch the yokes slightly.
Sew your waistband to our shorts with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Press your waistband and seam allowance up, away from the shorts.
Topstitch 1/8″ from the top of the waistband. Do not sew the bottom edge or along the short sides yet.
Push one end of your elastic into the corner of your waistband. Pin in place and repeat for the other side. Make sure your elastic is not twisted.
Sew along both short ends with a 1/4″ seam allowance to secure your elastic in place.
Fold your waistband lining down over your elastic so it is just covering your waistband seam. Pin in place from the right side of your shorts.
Topstitch around your waistband 1/8″ from the seam that joins your waistband to your shorts. Go slow and make sure you are catching the lining layer and not catching your elastic. You will need to stretch the elastic as you go to keep the waistband flat.
One more day to go! In the next post we will put the finishing touches on our shorts!
