What do you enjoy most about working at RP?
I love everything about it! The team, gosh our team. They are fantastic at what they do and just so much fun to work with. Plus seeing people’s makes. I get so inspired seeing what things people make with our patterns.
Can you tell us a little bit about how you got into your line of work that lead you to RP?
I applied to be on Series 3 of The Great British Sewing Bee and ended up being their standby contestant. I didn’t get called on but I got to prepare for all the challenges behind the scenes with the contestants. I loved it and decided that was that. I was going to do something where I got to explore my love of sewing and drafting. So, to cut a long story short… I published one of the patterns I’d drafted for my daughter, put it on Etsy and someone bought it! Fast forward a few years and I just can’t imagine it any other way!
What is your favourite RP pattern?
Kingston Jacket because flat fell seams. LOVE them.
Describe a typical day in your life.
Wake up, shower before kids are up, do kids breakfast/ get dressed/ homework/ reading/ herding, school run, then back home for RP! Usually a few phone calls with the team, maybe an hour or so filming a sew along, planning some marketing or perhaps an Instagram photoshoot. Pick the kids up from school, afternoon tea, have a cuppa while watching them racing round the garden, prep dinner, kids to bed, dinner with the hubby. Then either watch some Netflix, do some sewing or just chill. Usually a herbal tea then bed!
Tell us a bit about your style.
Ooh… I adore maxi dresses. Huge flowing ones that swish around my legs. Comfortable, chilled, but feeling fabulous. Ideally with trainers or wedges and a denim jacket and some sunnies.
Where are you from? And where do you currently live?
I was born in New Zealand (Kia ora!) and lived there ’til my early twenties. My whole family then immigrated one-by-one to the United Kingdom. I lived in London for a few years, then met my hubby and moved out to just north of London.
How long have you been sewing and how did you start?
I started sewing at age 8. Not saying how long that’s been but let’s just say a while… I wanted to make my own wedding dress (yes at 8). So I’d try these hugely complicated Vogue patterns and look up steps in my mum’s sewing books. I had such fun. Lots of total fails but it sparked a love of sewing and learning about sewing.
If you had one wish (not necessarily sewing related) what would it be?
There’s a big old house near where we live that I just adore. It’s been abandoned for years and I’d wish to buy it and do it up. It’s huge, old, and beautiful.
What’s your super power?
Other than turning a piece of material into something awesome? Child wrangling.
What’s the super power you really want?
I’d love to be able to make things with my mind! That would be cool. Like, I want a cup of tea and it would just appear.
Can you please share some go-to fail-safe tips for beginner sewistas?
Go slow and just try it. We’ve had a ton of beginners in our pattern tests. Even on the super complex patterns, we always make sure to invite some beginners in as well. It’s a good test of how well we’ve explained things in the pattern. It’s really hard to see the end result when you’re just starting, so don’t try to picture the whole thing. Just get some test fabric and try it. The worst that’ll happen is it won’t work. But then you’ve got a part-made garment you can take a picture of and post in our Facebook group to ask where you’ve gone wrong. The best is it’ll work and you can do it with your ‘good’ fabric! We’re always here to help.
Describe your perfect Sunday.
Sleep-in. Wake up to the sounds of happy kiddos playing downstairs and hubby relaxing with a cuppa. Nice warm weather and delish breakfast. Get ready, pop on one of my fav maxi dresses, just go slow all morning. Then picnic out somewhere with the kids. Spend the afternoon eating cake and drinking tea while watching them play. Lots of cuddles
If you were stranded on a desert island, which historical figure would you want with you?
Coco Chanel or Giorgio Armani.
What’s the sound of your favourite colour?
A clear beautifully blue sky with a slight breeze!
If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
Sew! Or learn photography. I’d love to learn to master my DSLR properly. Or learn a language. I started learning Chinese at school and would love to continue that.
If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning medal for?
Organising! I love a good list.
